HEDD Audio TYPE 40 Main & TYPE 40 System
Berlin-based company HEDD Audio has released the TYPE 40 Main and TYPE 40 System, a new reference monitoring system that delivers significantly more sound pressure and low-frequency energy than conventional near-field monitors while being more compact than traditional main monitors. We've compiled the most important information about the HEDD Audio TYPE 40 Main and TYPE 40 System for you in this news article.
The heart of the TYPE 40 system is the TYPE 40 Main Monitor. This closed, active 3-way loudspeaker is designed as a single unit to reproduce the entire frequency spectrum; according to HEDD, a subwoofer is not necessary. However, for additional control of low frequencies, up to three TYPE 40 XTD modules per channel can be added, which extend the headroom in the bass range and increase the output power.
The TYPE 40 Main was developed with a focus on use in professional mixing and mastering studios, post-production facilities, large control rooms, and high-end listening environments. The woofer's high excursion, combined with the sealed enclosure, ensures extended frequency response down to 20 Hz, allowing sound engineers to properly assess low-frequency signals such as kick drums, bass, and sub-bass frequencies.
The HEDD-handcrafted Air Motion Transformer is complemented by two 4-inch midrange drivers in a symmetrical D'Appolito MTM configuration. This creates a defined acoustic center, a uniform horizontal soundstage, and controlled vertical dispersion. Dedicated Class-D amplifiers deliver up to 123 dB SPL (peak) and combine main monitor headroom with precise stereo imaging and resolution.
Every TYPE 40 system configuration is built around the TYPE 40 Main Monitor as the reference loudspeaker. The XTD modules expand low-frequency capabilities, monitoring volume, and dispersion without altering the fundamental monitoring characteristics. Studios can install the system as needed and expand it later if room acoustics, listening distance, or operational requirements change.
Each actively driven XTD module features a 10.75-inch high-excursion woofer and a 700-watt Class-D amplifier. Up to three modules can be installed beneath a main monitor without taking up additional floor space. By installing a special top plate, the XTD modules can be converted from a bass-reflex to a physically sealed enclosure.

In the front-firing bass-reflex configuration, three XTD drivers increase the maximum sound pressure level at 50 Hz by up to 15 dB compared to operating the main speakers without extensions. The bass-reflex mode prioritizes efficiency and maximum output power, while the closed mode prioritizes the precision, definition, and resolution of low frequencies.
HEDD emphasizes that the TYPE 40 Main and each connected XTD function as a holistic, timing-accurate monitoring system. In Zero Phase mode, the HEDD Lineariser corrects the amplitude and phase response and balances the system in time to produce a coherent impulse response. FLAT preserves the frequency response correction without phase compensation. OFF ensures the lowest possible latency for recording and real-time applications.
The HEDD CTRL software manages each HEDD Audio Type 40 Main and XTD via Ethernet through a single interface. Once the physical configuration is set up and XTD operating modes are configured, CTRL automatically applies the appropriate LF Range and Qty settings. Engineers can manually correct the room acoustics from the listening position using a 12-band parametric EQ per speaker or in groups, and save presets for different workflows, formats, clients, or listening positions. HEDD CTRL can control a simple stereo pair—or a complex immersive installation with up to 250 speakers.
The HEDD Audio TYPE 40 Main and TYPE 40 XTD prices are €6,999 for the TYPE 40 Main (unit) and €6,499 for the TYPE 40 XTD (unit).
